Darma made the disclosure at the formal presentation of allocation letters to eligible staff of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), under the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme.
According to the minister, Nigeria requires more than 16 million housing units to accommodate over 100 million people who are either unhoused or living without adequate housing. He described providing housing for that many Nigerians as "a task, a very big one."
He also pointed to the rising cost of home construction as a separate but related pressure, noting that homeownership has become increasingly difficult for ordinary Nigerians.
The Chief Executive of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), Shehu Osidi, said NMDPRA staff had subscribed to 430 housing units in Karsana, Abuja, and Janguza, Kano. He added that FMBN had signed a memorandum of understanding for a ₦10 billion housing loan scheme for federal civil servants, with additional housing projects also planned for Asaba, Enugu and Ibadan.
Darma said the NMDPRA initiative mattered beyond its immediate numbers, framing every unit of housing delivered as a meaningful step given the scale of the national shortfall.
The 110-million figure follows other recent statements from the ministry. Darma has separately said the government is working to ensure workers no longer have to commit 40 to 60 percent of their income to rent, and the ministry has identified nearly 250,000 abandoned housing units nationwide some dating back to the Obasanjo administration as a potential source of additional supply.
A gap of this size means affordable housing allocations like the NMDPRA scheme will remain limited and highly sought after relative to demand expect continued pressure on rents and purchase prices in the near term, not quick relief. For anyone pursuing a FMBN-linked allocation or mortgage scheme, verify eligibility and terms directly with FMBN or your employer's housing committee, and confirm any real estate professional assisting you is verified on REMCAN Realers before paying anything toward an allocation.
